Road Reporter:
Road Reports on Driving Conditions in the North

511.alaska.comAlaska's "511 Travel in the Know" provides travel alerts, driving conditions, roadwork updates and weather forecasts. Phone 511 from anywhere in Alaska or go to http://511.alaska.gov. A Route Summary tool on the web site provides a report on both driving conditions and roadwork for specific itineraries. 511 Travel in the Know and other travel links and information may also be accessed from the Travel Information pull-down menu on the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities web site at www.dot.state.ak.us.

The highway construction season in Alaska typically runs from the beginning of May to the end of October. Construction work zones can appear anywhere, from major arterials in Anchorage to two lane highways in rural Alaska. Keep in mind that traffic fines double in highway construction work zones! When traveling through work zones, the Department asks that motorists be alert to construction workers and equipment, reduce your speed, and follow the directions of flaggers and posted signs.

In Alaska, studded tires are legal on a paved highway or road from September 15 to May 1 north of 60 degrees North Latitude (includes all of Sterling Highway) and from September 30 to April 15 south of 60 degrees North Latitude.

Travelers may check daily road reports for current driving conditions in the Yukon by visiting the Department of Highways & Public Works web site at www.gov.yk.ca/roadreport.

British Columbia's Drive BC traveler information system at http://www.drivebc.ca provides road conditions and event information for the entire province.

Remember to buckle up and have a safe journey!
