Klawock originally was a Tlingit Indian summer fishing village; a trading post and salmon saltery were established here in 1868. The local economy is still dependent on fishing, along with timber cutting and sawmilling. Grocery store with deli and liquor, and gas/diesel are available.

- Klawock Totem Park contains 21 replicas of the original totem poles that stood at Tuxekan, the former winter village of the Keenyz Kwaan people. The poles were originally relocated here in 1938–40 as part of a Civilian Conservation Corps project. The Long House is located along the main highway.
