New Hazelton is located at the junction of Yellowhead Highway 16 and BC Highway 62, 177 miles east of Prince Rupert.

Visitor Information:  New Hazelton Area Visitor Centre in 2-story log building at the junction; museum, local artisan display, restrooms, free sani-dump, potable water, picnic tables. Look for the 3 statues representing the gold rush packer Cataline, the Northwest miner, and the Upper Skeena logger. Phone 250-842-6071 in summer; 250-842-6571 October to May.

The first of 3 communities westbound sharing the name Hazelton (the others are Hazelton and South Hazelton), known collectively as The Hazeltons.

These 3 small highway communities offering lodging at  Cataline Motel and RV Park (phone 250-842-5271) and several other motels. Camping at Cataline RV Park (year round), at ‘Ksan Campground on River Road and at Seeley Lake Provincial Park May 13–Sept. 15 weather permitting). Dining at Zelda’s Travel Mug Cafe, the Skeena Bakery (with WiFi), Subway, Rob’s Restaurant, and the New Hazelton Deli. Other services include a Royal Bank of Canada and a credit union, a laundromat with showers, and service stations (Chevron, Esso). Shopping facilities include a bakery, supermarket, hardware/automotive stores and a department store. ATMs are located in the Chevron station in New Hazelton, at Bulkley Valley Credit Union off of Highway 16, at the Royal Bank and at the Gitanmaax Food and Fuel gas station on Highway 62 leading to Old Hazelton.

 

Attractions:

  • Historic “Old Town” Hazelton, reconstructed to look much like it did in the 1890s.
  • ‘Ksan Historic Indian Village and Museum, a replica Gitxsan Indian village, has 7 communal houses, totem poles and dugout canoes.
  • Sportfishing the Bulkley and Kispiox rivers.
  • A 1-lane bridge spans Hagwilget Canyon of the Bulkley River, one of the most photographed places in Canada.
